On Wednesday 19th October the Society held its annual competition to find the most entertaining Stage Act.Mel Harvey with his new comedy act was the winner getting the “double up” having won the annual Close-up Competition earlier in the year.Other competitiors included Matt Redmond, Keith Crackers and big Dave Taylor. In addition to the President’s Trophy Mel also won tickets for the dinner. As he already had tickets for the dinner these were distributed to the other competitors. Mel thanked the judges, the other competitors and the audience for their support. Mel’s wife Nicky came in for a special mention as during rehearsals at home she is constantly being asked “is this funny” !”

Last night Mel Harvey won this years close-up competition with a gangster themed performance.

He came on dressed like a gangster and themed his act around this starting off by “bribing” the judges!

Mel now goes forward to represent the club at the Midlands Champion of Champions competition in June.

The competition was close with notable performances from Mark Traversoni, Paul Kybert and John Goldsborough.

An enjoyable night was had by all with our compere Mick McCreath having us in stitches between acts.

Last night we had the privilege of welcoming David, Craig and John to the club to show us some of their product range.

The presentation was fresh, comical, witty and interesting, even though they had been up until 4am the night before.

It was an excellent night and we recommend any other societies that may be interested to invite them to your club.

Mark Traversoni wins Stage Competition

Last Wednesday was the annual Leamington and Warwick Magic Society Stage Competition.

Mark is pictured receiving the trophy from President Keith Pearson who organised a terrific night of entertainment for the club and invited guests. Mark’s act consisted of a mix of mentalism and classic magic: After a few gags when predictions were obviously manipulated he correctly predicted three freely chosen cards selected from a pack that was handled examined and shuffled by the spectators.

The magic element of his act consisted of a humorous presentation of the linking rings with a volunteer, his presentation of the floating table and to finish a magic classic the multiplying bottles.

Thanks to Paul Kybert for being compare and to the other competitors Stephen Buxton, Matt Redmond, Andy and Fletcher.

Michael Ammar Lecture

Chris Tyson Passes Away 7th July.

As you may have heard by now, Chris Tyson passed away last week.

He hadn’t been a member of our society for very long, and was not always able to come to the meetings due to pressures at work . But when he was there, he made valuable contributions.

Chris had been suffering with brain tumour for some time.

The Society would like to pass on our sympathy to his wife Roo, daughter Scarlett and to the rest of his family who have had a loved one taken from them so prematurely.

The funeral is on Tuesday 3rd August details are yet to be advised. The family have asked that no flowers be sent, but donations be made to Myton Hospice who took such good care of Chris.

Darker Side of Magic Alain the Story Teller + others 3rd Nov

Alain has long been recognised as one of the best magical Storytellers of today, with an excellent blend of sleight Of hand and storytelling.

On this free night you have the chance to witness a full show that Alain hopes to take on tour at some point in the future.

This will be the first run to gauge reactions etc and tweak the set.

When details of he other performers is available I will let you know.

It will be held at the Leamington and Warwick Magic Society.

This is bizarre magic at its best and not to be missed.

Paul Kybert Wins 2010 Close-up Competition

Last night 20th May Paul Kybert put in a brilliant performance with a great twist on some traditional plots in magic.

After producing a goldfish and constantley refering to it which had us wonder why, he went to produce a card which had its corner previoulsy removed from his wallet inside which were 2 sealed envelopes only to find it filled with fish food not the card.

It was then found that the card was inside the fish food container that had been on the table the whole time. Brilliant thinking and a worthy winner who now gains entry to the Midland Champion of Champion Competition on 23rd June.

Well done to all the other competitors (Mark Traversoni, Jonathan, David Taylor and Matthew Redmond) who made this one of the best fought competitions in a long time.

Special thanks also go to our Junior section who put on as show for us in the first half of the evening. The quality of their magic and showmanship is coming on leaps and bounds and we are very proud to have such talented new blood in our society.

Michael Ammar Lecture 6th October 2010

Hot news today is that Michael Ammar will be lecturing for us on the 6th of October.

He will also be holding a private session before the lecture which will be for a limited number of people, this will be at an extra cost of £25 for each member.

Places are limited to 6-12 members so be quick if you want a place I’ll be there!

The main lecture will start as normal 7.30pm for 8.00pm start.

We will expect quite a few visitors (£10 entrance fee) for this so please come early.

Stephen Buxton Injured

Stephen has had an accident and broken both of his elbows, he will be out of action for about 6 weeks.

We wish him well and send him our best wished for a speedy recovery.
